Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery
at Heidelberg University Hospital
The Department of Cardiac Surgery at Heidelberg University Hospital offers the full spectrum of surgical treatment of heart disease at the highest international standards. The Division of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery was established especially for the surgical treatment of congenital heart defects and acquired heart disease in patients of all ages.
First-class medical treatment of congenital heart defects in children and adults
Every year, our experienced pediatric cardiac surgeons perform more than 350 operations to correct congenital heart defects in patients ranging from newborns to adults. About 250 of these procedures are carried out using the heart–lung machine, and about 100 without it.
The latest technology is available to our surgeons around the clock to use for the entire range of perioperative diagnostic procedures and therapies, including special ventilation and support techniques (e.g., ECMO, NO, oscillation), endoscopy procedures, and support and assist systems.
Treating patients with congenital heart defects
We work in close cooperation with the experts at the Department of Pediatric Cardiology at the Center for Child and Adolescent Medicine in Heidelberg in treating patients with congenital heart defects. Child and adolescent patients are admitted and treated there before and after surgery, including receiving post-operative care in the specialized pediatric cardiac intensive care unit.
The treatment we can offer spans the complete spectrum of corrective and palliative cardiac surgery for newborns, infants, children, and adults with congenital heart defects (ACHD).
The pediatric cardiac surgery division has two surgeons certified by the German Association for Thoracic, Cardiac, and Vascular Surgery with the special “Certificate in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.”
Interdisciplinary team
In addition, the pediatric cardiac surgery division cooperates closely with the Department of Cardiology at Heidelberg University Hospital, and has a national certification specifically for the treatment of “adults with congenital heart defects” (ACHD certification) within the existing maximal care function of Heidelberg University Hospital, a certified Cardiac Center.
Several departments at the university hospital are closely integrated to provide interdisciplinary patient care. Specialists in all of the disciplines required for such care are available around the clock. Each patient’s case is individually presented and discussed in depth in weekly joint interdisciplinary conferences, during which the optimal treatment is decided on.
In addition to our division’s very close cooperation with the Department of Pediatric Cardiology, specialists in anesthesiology, pediatric surgery, nephrology, vascular surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, pediatric radiology, in all of the areas of specialty within the children’s hospital, and in special post-operative intensive care, including special care of premature babies, are active participants in interdisciplinary care.
